Typical Food in Canada

According to the Canada Broadcasting Corp.'s (CBC) Digital Archives, Colonel Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants, remarked in 1957 that Canadian food was tasteless. However, plenty of Canadians would disagree with that, instead pointing out some of Canada's typical foods as favorites, each with its own individual flavor.

Bacon
Lumberjack breakfast

Canadian bacon, also called back bacon, comes from the pork loin instead of the pork belly like regular bacon. A favorite breakfast in Canada, the lumberjack breakfast includes bacon and other breakfast meats with large servings of eggs and pancakes.

Maple Syrup
Canadian maple syrup represents one of Canada's favorite foods and is exported to other countries. Served on pancakes and used in cooking and baking, maple syrup is so important to Canadians that the maple tree's leaf is also prominent on Canada's flag.

Poutine
PoutineWell known in Quebec province and eaten elsewhere too, poutine possibly takes the prize as the most popular yet the least nutritious typical Canadian food. French fries cut thick and cheese curds provide a mixed base for hot gravy. It is sometimes considered an unofficial Canadian national food.

Tourtière and Pate Chinois
Tourtière Traditionally a Christmas food served after Mass, Tourtière contains pork and sometimes other meats such as beef or veal inside a flaky golden crust. Another type of favorite non-dessert pie is Pate Chinois, also from Quebec. Pate Chinois resembles a shepherd's pie with the difference of corn added between the meat and mashed potatoes.

Fiddleheads
Fiddleheads Fiddleheads take their name from resembling the coiled part on a fiddle. It is a plant from eastern Canada found in the wild, picked then sold in seasonal markets. According to Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), fiddleheads need to be thoroughly cooked before eating because of an unidentified natural toxin.

Snack Foods
Nanaimo bars Canadians, like Americans, enjoy a good snack. Favorite snack foods include May Wests (the Canadian version of a Twinkie) and beaver tails (whole wheat flat pastry cooked in oil, then covered in butter and sweetened cinnamon). Another popular option, called the Nanaimo bar, consists of a crumb layer covered by vanilla icing or custard. A third layer of melted chocolate sits on top.
